Parents rarely expect their babies to be born early, or with additional complications that will see them requiring an admission to the neonatal intensive care unit – or NICU. Yet this is a reality for nearly 1 in every 5 Australian babies, equating to approximately 30,000 babies per year.
Jaida Penny is an undergraduate at the University of Western Australia, and a research assistant on the Early Neurodevelopment and Mental Health team at the Telethon Kids Institute. Her work focuses on equity in early childhood, particularly for Aboriginal babies and young children. Jaida was named as a finalist for the Aboriginal STEM Student of the Year award at the 2024 Premier's Science Awards.
